“I went from hell to heaven. I had just won an incredible match at Wimbledon against Garbi Muguruza, top 14 in the world and one of the favourites to win the tournament. I was at the peak of my career as a professional tennis player.
I had fulfilled a dream, to beat a top 20 player. I was only 23 years old and I felt that I could compete against the best players in the world.
Days later I received an email from the ITF, where they literally accused me of doping and suspended me as a professional player. The world fell at my feet”.
This is a fragment of the letter published by Beatriz Haddad Maia on 22 May 2020, when she was informed, after 10 months of doping sanctions, that she was officially free to play tennis again.
Despite confirming the thesis of non-voluntariness defended by Beatriz’s legal defence, she went from being number 58 in the world to being out of the circuit.

She went from rubbing shoulders with players like Muguruza, playing on the fine green grass of tournaments like Wimbledon or enjoying the benefits of having sponsors, to having to play a qualifying round to be able to play in the main draw of a 25k ITF tournament in Portugal, playing without an audience and paying for the trip out of her own pocket.
Beatriz’s history is full of downs. She went through three surgeries; two back hernias and a shoulder hernia.
All at the age of just 23.

In September 2020, Beatriz returned to the circuit, winning 27 of the 29 matches she played and winning 4 ITF titles.
